Olajuwon “King Fresh” Sims is the winner of Nissan’s Next Up Competition. King Fresh is a Benedict College (HBCU) graduated producer, songwriter, and composer who has been thrilled by music since his youth. He says music is his best form of communicating. And with acknowledgments from multi-Grammy Award winner, Just Blaze, that truth is undeniable.
Nissan and BET partnered up to launch the BET x Nissan competition, aiming to discover the next generation of music producers. With the expertise of 7x Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer Just Blaze, they selected and mentored three emerging talents in music production, utilizing the latest technology to elevate their sound. King Fresh Music had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have his track premiered on the night of the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards!

Olajuwon Sims (born May 9, 1990), known professionally as King Fresh, is an American producer, songwriter, and composer celebrated for his unique and innovative sounds in the music production industry. In 2021, the BET team stated, "you really are the epitome of what we were hoping to do here" regarding his entry in the BET x Nissan competition, specifically the 2021 BET x NISSAN Next Up Producer Competition.
King Fresh’s journey in music production began with his first project, creating music for a Mcleod Seacoast commercial shortly after completing internships at Fluid/Gimme Butter in NYC and Concentrix Music and Sound Design (now Storyline Music and Sound) based in Charlotte, NC. This commercial won a student Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and marked the first award received by a Benedict College student.
In 2013, King Fresh earned his B.A. Degree from Benedict College in Columbia, SC. After graduation, he relocated to Cleveland, OH, where he worked as a Freelance Composer. Soon after, he collaborated with Garage Creative Studios on a project for Hitchcock Fleming & Associates (now Aftermath), an advertising agency based in Akron, Ohio. King Fresh dedicated himself to perfecting his sound and creativity, eventually moving to Northern Virginia.
While in Virginia, King Fresh continued his music endeavors and embraced family life as a husband and father. A few years after his move, he entered the 2021 BET x Nissan competition, collaborating with 7-time Grammy nominee Just Blaze, and was selected as a finalist out of thousands of submissions. Traveling to New York with two other finalists, King Fresh had the opportunity to present an original project and receive a one-on-one coaching session with Just Blaze. His original track garnered high praise, with a BET team member noting, "your track, Just Blaze said it, he didn’t even have to do that much to it, it came in hot." King Fresh ultimately won the competition, and his project titled "Drippin’" was featured in the Nissan Pathfinder commercial rotation around the 2021 Bet Hip Hop Awards.
The success from the BET x Nissan competition motivated King Fresh to further pursue his music career, leading him to collaborate with lyricist Navelle Hice from Chester, PA, whom he met during his time in New York. Hice worked with the competitors to add lyrics to their productions. King Fresh and Hice quickly established musical chemistry, impressing Just Blaze, who suggested they create an EP together. Blaze indicated he wanted a project completed in six months, but King Fresh and Hice produced their first EP titled "Blaze Made Us Do It" in just six weeks. The EP received accolades from both Just Blaze and BET Network, with the record "Get It and Flip It" premiering on BET Jams and BET’s YouTube Channel. King Fresh and Hice also featured in BET’s Amplified segment on their website.
Today, King Fresh maintains a deep passion for music and integrates it into his everyday life. For him, music is the ultimate form of communication. He continues to focus on music production, particularly soundtracks for post-production.
